Cultural notes

Shopping for clothes in South Korea is a thrilling experience, fueled by the fast-paced, highly trendy K-fashion industry. However, foreign shoppers often encounter several significant cultural and logistical surprises when hitting the stores. The most jarring of these is the concept of "Free Size" (프리 사이즈 - Peuri saijeu). Walk into many trendy boutiques, particularly those catering to women, and you will notice that garments do not have Small, Medium, or Large tags; they only come in one size. While "Free Size" translates to "one-size-fits-all," the reality is that it typically aligns with a Western size Extra-Small to Small, reflecting the generally slender build of the local population. If you ask for a larger size (더 큰 사이즈 있나요? - Deo keun saijeu itnayo?), you might be told that it is the only size available. Shoe shopping also requires a numerical mental shift. Korea does not use US, UK, or European shoe sizes; instead, they measure feet strictly in millimeters. For example, a European size 38 or US size 7.5 translates to a Korean size 240. When it comes to trying clothes on, the fitting room (피팅룸 - Pitingrum) etiquette is incredibly strict to protect the merchandise. First, you must usually take off your shoes before stepping into the fitting room cabin. Second, if you are trying on tops or dresses, the staff will hand you a white, disposable face cover—a thin fabric mask—that you must place over your head to prevent your makeup from transferring onto the neckline of the clothes. Respecting these rules guarantees a smooth and extremely polite shopping experience.
