Cultural notes

Riding a bus in South Korea is a dynamic and sometimes adrenaline-pumping experience, deeply influenced by the national "Palli-Palli" (hurry up) culture. Bus drivers are known for their efficiency and rapid acceleration, so the golden rule is to hold on tight immediately upon boarding! To pay your fare, you tap your T-money card on the machine at the front door. Crucially, you must remember to tap your card again on the machine at the rear door when you exit (하차 태그 - Hacha taegeu). Failing to do so means you will be charged the maximum fare for the route, and you will lose out on the free transfer discounts valid between buses and subways within 30 minutes. Another absolute strict law implemented recently in Korea prohibits taking any takeaway drinks or open food onto city buses. If you try to board with an iced americano or a snack in your hand, the driver will flatly refuse you entry. In Seoul, the public buses are color-coded to help you navigate: Blue buses connect different districts, Green buses run within specific neighborhoods, Red buses are rapid lines going to the suburbs, and Yellow buses circle the central tourist areas. If you are traveling between cities, you will skip the trains and take an Express Bus (고속버스 - Gosok-beoseu). These intercity buses are astonishingly luxurious, especially the "Premium" class, which features massive, reclining leather seats, individual curtains, and USB charging ports, offering airplane-like comfort at very affordable prices.
