If there is one absolute essential item you must acquire within your first hour in South Korea, it is the T-money card (티머니 카드). This ubiquitous, rechargeable smart card is the magic key to navigating the entire country seamlessly. You can easily purchase one at any convenience store (편의점 - Pyeonuijeom) such as CU, GS25, or 7-Eleven, or from vending machines inside subway stations. While buying the card itself is straightforward, there is a crucial cultural and logistical catch that catches many tourists off guard: recharging the card (충전 - Chungjeon) can absolutely *only* be done using physical cash (현금 - Hyeongeum). You cannot use a foreign or even a domestic credit card to top up your T-money balance at machines or convenience stores. The beauty of the T-money system lies in its integrated transfer discount (환승할인 - Hwanseung harin). When you switch from the subway to a bus, or between buses, within a 30-minute window, the transfer is usually free or heavily discounted. To ensure you receive this discount and avoid penalty fees, you must rigorously remember to tap your card both when boarding (승차 태그 - Seungcha taegeu) and importantly, when exiting the bus or subway (하차 태그 - Hacha taegeu). You can always check your remaining balance (잔액 - Janaek) on the small digital screens as you tap through the turnstiles. Beyond transportation, the T-money card essentially acts as a versatile digital wallet; you can use it to pay for taxi fares, buy snacks at convenience stores, or even purchase drinks from vending machines across the city.
