Cultural notes

One of the most astonishing and refreshing cultural shocks for tourists visiting South Korea is the country's extraordinarily high level of public safety and social trust. Petty theft and pickpocketing are virtually non-existent. It is a common, everyday sight in bustling Seoul cafes to see people leave their latest iPhones, designer bags, or expensive laptops entirely unattended on a table just to reserve their seat while they step outside or go to the restroom. If you accidentally leave your wallet (지갑 - Jigap) in a taxi or on the subway, panic shouldn't be your first reaction. The chances of recovering it are incredibly high. You should immediately head to the nearest Lost and Found Center (분실물 센터 - Bunsilmul senteo) or police station. The reason for this extreme honesty is twofold: deeply ingrained cultural morals and the omnipresence of surveillance cameras (씨씨티비 - CCTV). South Korea is one of the most heavily monitored countries in the world, and stealing someone's belongings is a guaranteed way to get caught on camera. If you need to store your belongings while traveling, major subway stations and train terminals are equipped with highly modern coin lockers (물품 보관함 - Mulpum bogwanham). However, you won't find physical keys here. Everything is digital. You simply select an empty locker on the touchscreen, create a custom PIN code (비밀번호 - Bimilbeonho) or scan your fingerprint, and pay using your T-money card or credit card. If you leave your luggage in the locker past midnight, be prepared to pay an extra fee (추가 요금 - Chuga yogeum) directly on the screen before the automated door will pop open for you to retrieve your bags.
