Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 30, 2026

Langasia ("we", "us", or "our") operates the Langasia website (langasia.com), mobile applications (including the Langasia Android app), and related language-learning services for Japanese and Korean. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share information when you use our services.

By creating an account or using Langasia, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.

1. Who we are

Data controller: Langasia
Contact: blog.langasia.com/contact
Website: langasia.com

For privacy-related requests, contact us using the form above and include the email address associated with your account.

2. Information we collect

2.1 Account and profile data

When you register or sign in, we may collect:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Password (stored in hashed form; we never store plain-text passwords)
  • User role and language preferences (e.g. learning language, interface language)
  • Profile photo (if you upload one)
  • Email verification status
  • Authentication tokens used to keep you signed in on your devices

This data is used to create and manage your account, authenticate API requests from our mobile apps, and personalize your experience.

2.2 Learning progress and gamification data

To provide lessons, track your progress, and power gamification features, we store data such as:

  • Completed lessons, tracks, and vocabulary items
  • Daily goals, study streaks, streak freezes, and calendar activity
  • Experience points (XP), energy, levels, and progression status
  • Quiz and flashcard results (including dictionary study sessions and kanji quizzes)
  • Romanization and display preferences related to learning content
  • Offline sync metadata and pending completion queues on mobile devices

This information is linked to your account so your progress is available across sessions and devices.

2.3 Dictionary and saved words

If you use the integrated dictionary (including saved/favorite words), we may store:

  • Words you save or mark for review
  • Search and study activity related to saved vocabulary
  • Dictionary language context (e.g. Japanese or Korean)

Saved words are associated with your account and synchronized with our servers when you are signed in.

2.4 Microphone and speech recognition data

Langasia uses your device microphone only during speaking challenges to help you practice pronunciation.

  • Real-time processing: Audio is processed in real time by your device's speech recognition service (such as Google Speech Services on Android) to transcribe speech and compare it to lesson phrases.
  • No storage by Langasia: We do not record, store, or retain audio files on Langasia servers, and we do not keep audio on your device after a speaking challenge ends.
  • System provider: The speech recognition provider on your device may process audio according to its own privacy policy. We do not use your audio for advertising or unrelated third-party marketing.

You will see an in-app disclosure before microphone permission is requested.

2.5 Notifications

If you enable study reminders, we store your notification preferences (such as reminder time and enabled/disabled status) and schedule local notifications on your device. On Android 13 and later, the app requests the POST_NOTIFICATIONS permission before showing notifications.

We do not use notifications for unrelated marketing unless you separately opt in.

2.6 Technical and usage data

We may automatically collect limited technical information necessary to operate and secure our services, such as:

  • Device type, operating system, and app version
  • IP address and general connection information
  • API request logs, error reports, and security-related events
  • Cookies and similar technologies on our website (see Section 8)

We use this data to maintain service reliability, prevent abuse, and improve performance.

3. How we use your information

We use the information described above to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve Langasia's learning features
  • Authenticate users and secure accounts
  • Synchronize progress between the website and mobile apps
  • Deliver dictionary, phrasebook, lesson, and gamification functionality
  • Send optional study reminders you configure
  • Respond to support requests and enforce our terms
  • Comply with legal obligations and protect against fraud or misuse

We do not sell your personal information.

4. Legal bases (EEA/UK users)

Where applicable under GDPR or similar laws, we process personal data based on:

  • Contract: to provide the services you request (account, lessons, progress sync)
  • Consent: for optional features such as notifications and microphone access
  • Legitimate interests: to secure, maintain, and improve our platform, subject to your rights
  • Legal obligation: where required by law

5. How we share information

We share information only when necessary:

5.1 Service providers

We use trusted providers to host and operate Langasia, such as infrastructure, file storage (for example profile photos), email delivery, and payment/subscription processing when you upgrade on our website. These providers may access data only to perform services on our behalf.

5.2 Speech recognition providers

When you use speaking challenges, audio is processed by your device's operating system or speech recognition provider (for example Google Speech Services). That processing is governed by the provider's own terms and privacy policy.

5.3 Legal and safety reasons

We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or governmental request, or when necessary to protect the rights, safety, and security of Langasia, our users, or others.

5.4 Business transfers

If Langasia is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, user information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to continued protection consistent with this policy.

We do not share your learning data or account information with third parties for their independent advertising purposes.

6. Data retention

We retain personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements.

When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize associated personal data within a reasonable period, except where retention is required by law or for legitimate security/back-up purposes. Dictionary data and learning progress linked to your account are removed as part of account deletion on our platform.

Local data cached on your mobile device may remain until you uninstall the app or clear app data.

7. Your rights and choices

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate account or profile information in your profile settings
  • Delete your account and associated data
  • Object to or restrict certain processing
  • Withdraw consent where processing is consent-based (such as notifications or microphone use)
  • Request a copy of your data in a portable format where applicable

Account deletion

You can delete your Langasia account from your profile settings on langasia.com when signed in. Account deletion permanently removes your account and associated personal data, subject to legal retention requirements.

Microphone and notifications

You can deny or revoke microphone and notification permissions in your device settings at any time. Some features may not work without the relevant permission.

If you are in the EEA or UK, you may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

9. International transfers

Langasia may process and store information in countries other than your own. When we transfer personal data internationally, we take appropriate safeguards consistent with applicable law.

10. Children's privacy

Langasia is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us personal data, contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

11. Security

We use administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; please use a strong, unique password and keep your login credentials confidential.

12. Third-party links

Langasia may link to external sites (for example our blog, help center, or billing pages). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third-party sites.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Material changes may also be communicated through the app or by email where appropriate. Continued use of Langasia after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
