Cultural notes

South Korea places a monumental, almost unparalleled emphasis on education and academic prestige. The entire educational journey culminates in a single, high-stakes university entrance exam known as the Suneung (수능). On the day of this exam, the entire country effectively shuts down: flights are grounded during the listening test, the stock market opens late, and police escort late students to their test centers! The ultimate goal for students is to gain admission into one of the "SKY" universities (Seoul National, Korea, and Yonsei), which essentially guarantees a high-status corporate job and social respect. To achieve this, Korean children spend their evenings and weekends at private cram schools called Hagwons (학원), resulting in a grueling daily schedule. For foreigners residing in Korea, learning the language is highly encouraged and deeply appreciated. Many expats attend university language institutes called Eohakdang (어학당) to master the language formally. Koreans are notoriously encouraging when a foreigner speaks even a few words of Korean. You will almost certainly be praised with 한국말을 참 잘하시네요 (Hangungmareul cham jalhasineyo - "You speak Korean very well!"). However, cultural etiquette demands that you do not simply accept the compliment with a proud "Thank you." In a society that values deep humility, the only correct and culturally appropriate response is to politely deny the praise by saying 아니에요, 아직 서툴러요 (Anieyo, ajik seotulleoyo - "No, I am still clumsy/not good at it"). Participating in language exchange meetups (언어 교환 - Eoneo gyohwan) is a fantastic way for foreigners to improve their skills while making Korean friends, provided you navigate the linguistic humility required by the culture.
