Cultural notes

To truly sound like a local in South Korea, memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules isn't enough; you must also master the intricate art of the "Reaction" (리액션 - Riaeksyeon). In many Western cultures, we might listen quietly and attentively while someone tells a long story, so as not to interrupt them. In Korea, however, listening in pure silence can easily be misinterpreted as disinterest, boredom, or a lack of empathy. Active listening in Korean culture requires constant, specific vocal feedback. Words like 진짜요? (Jinjjayo? - Really?), 대박 (Daebak - Awesome, Crazy, or Jackpot!), and 헐 (Heol - Oh my god, or Wow) are the absolute glue of daily conversations. You will also frequently hear Koreans exclaiming 아이고 (Aigo), a highly versatile, untranslatable sigh that conveys everything from deep exhaustion and sympathy to mild surprise or physical pain—very much like the British "Oh dear" but used much more often. Showing strong, vocal empathetic reactions proves that you are deeply engaged with the speaker’s emotions and story. This constant feedback loop is essential because it builds *Jeong* (정), a profound sense of emotional connection, unspoken affection, and social bonding that is entirely unique to Korean culture. Even if your Korean grammar isn't perfect and your vocabulary is limited, peppering your conversations with these natural, short, and expressive reactions will immediately make you seem friendly, culturally aware, and an absolute joy to talk to.
