What should I do?
South Korea’s infrastructure operates like a well-oiled machine, so when travel disruptions occur, they are usually the result of extreme weather, such as summer typhoons or heavy winter snow, rather than systemic failures. Unlike many Western rail networks, the Korean high-speed train (KTX) prides itself on absolute, down-to-the-minute punctuality. If your train is officially delayed (기차가 연착되었어요 - Gichaga yeonchakdoeeosseoyo) by more than 20 minutes, the national railway (Korail) automatically compensates you with a partial refund on your credit card. If you are the one who messed up and missed your train (기차를 놓쳤어요 - Gichareul nochyeosseoyo), you can rush to the ticket counter. As long as you present your ticket quickly after departure, staff can often refund a large percentage of your fare and book you on the next available train. Flight cancellations (항공편이 취소되었어요 - Hanggongpyeoni chwisodoeeosseoyo) are mostly handled digitally via KakaoTalk notifications, but ground staff at Incheon Airport are incredibly efficient at rerouting stranded passengers (다른 비행기로 변경할 수 있나요? - Dareun bihaenggiro byeongyeonghal su itnayo? / "Can I change to another flight?"). Another common travel mishap is getting separated from your group in massively crowded areas like Myeongdong or huge underground subway transfers. If you lose your companions (일행을 잃어버렸어요 - Ilhaengeul ireobeoryeosseoyo), don't panic. You can approach a tourist police officer (identifiable by their blue jackets) or go to a subway customer service center. They are more than willing to make a public broadcast announcement to help reunite you. Knowing how to politely ask "What should I do?" (어떻게 해야 하나요? - Eotteoke haeya hanayo?) will quickly turn any stressful travel disaster into a manageable bump in the road.
