For the younger generation, the absolute pinnacle of leisure is the PC Bang (PC방). These are not the dim, outdated internet cafes found in the West; they are hyper-modern, 24/7 gaming arenas equipped with top-tier gaming rigs, glowing mechanical keyboards, and surprisingly gourmet food that you can order straight to your desk with a click. E-sports are treated like national sports here! Another iconic pastime is the Coin Noraebang (코인노래방). Instead of renting a large karaoke room with a group, you can step into a tiny, soundproof phone-booth-sized room, insert a 1,000 Won bill, and sing three songs at the top of your lungs, alone or with a friend. On weekends, however, a massive segment of the population swaps their screens for high-tech outdoor gear. Hiking (등산 - Deungsan) is the unofficial national pastime. Korean mountains are swarming with hikers of all ages, beautifully equipped, who often share Makgeolli (rice wine) and savory pancakes at the peak. At home, consuming K-Pop and K-Dramas is a serious business. The fan culture is intense, and knowing the terminology helps you connect. For instance, your absolute favorite group member is called your 최애 (Choeae - "Ultimate Bias"). When a new K-Drama drops on Netflix, it is completely standard to engage in 정주행 (Jeongjuhaeng), which literally translates to "driving straight through," but in pop culture means to mercilessly binge-watch the entire series in one sitting. Engaging with these vibrant hobbies is the fastest way to integrate and find common ground with Korean locals.
