Use

Indicates the topic of the sentence.

  • [watashi wa Akiyama desu]

    ▸ 私は秋山です。

    I'm Akiyama.

  • [watashi wa igirisu-jin desu]

    ▸ 私はイギリス人です。

    I'm English.

  • [kanojo wa shinsetsu na hito desu]

    ▸ 彼女は親切な人です。

    She is a kind person.

- Note: do not confuse the reading ha (は) with the particle wa (は), which is written the same way in Japanese は. The syllable は is always read wa when it is a particle and it is always read ha when it is not a particle.
